Hockey to take new approach

Vice-president of the Jamaica Hockey federation, Audrey Gaynor, says the Federation is on the brink of launching its national junior programme as it seeks to qualify a team for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Gaynor told STAR Sports that this new effort is aimed at capturing the talents which come from the 'highly successful' high school programme.

"We have a very good high school programme but a lot of people lose interest because there is nothing in place to keep them together between when they left that stage and to go into the senior programme," Gaynor said.

REVAMPTHEIRAPPROACH

After a modest outing at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, where the male and female teams finished fifth and sixth, respectively, Gaynor said it is now time to revamp their approach.

"We are also thinking of launching an inter-community programme where we can give the players coming out of high an opportunity to continue to develop their skills," Gaynor said. "It is a collaboration with Insports and it is something that we looking into and we want to start it pretty soon."

She continued: "We are junior focused now and we are also looking at community hockey, so these two efforts should help us to further develop the sport and achieve our objective of going to the Olympics."
