'Mongoose' to stand trail for fatal stabbing at wake last year
A St Catherine man known by the nickname 'Mongoose' will now have to answer to a murder charge in the High Court after a judge ruled that prosecutors have enough evidence for him to stand trial for a deadly wake-time stabbing last year.
Chevaughn McBeans is set to face trial on May 15, 2026, in the St Catherine Circuit Court sitting in Kingston, over the killing of 25-year-old labourer Kevin Robinson, otherwise called 'Maggie', of Williamsfield District in Riversdale.
The decision was handed down when the matter came before Parish Court Judge Geneta Smikle, who ruled that a prima facie case had been made out against McBeans, despite defence arguments that the Crown's case had serious flaws.
McBeans' attorney-at-law Ann-Marie Fertado-Richards told the court there were issues with identification evidence and suggested that witnesses had supported a claim of self-defence.
"What we have seen here from at least two witnesses have corroborated self-defence," she argued.
However, the judge disagreed, stating that after reviewing the statements, the matter should proceed to trial.
McBeans was granted bail in the sum of $1,000,000 with one to three sureties. He has been ordered to report three times weekly to the Retreat Police in St Mary, be fingerprinted, comply with a stop order, and surrender his travel documents.
Allegations are that around 1:00 a.m. on July 26, 2025, Robinson was at a wake in Williamsfield District when a dispute erupted between him and McBeans.
It is alleged that McBeans stabbed Robinson repeatedly in the chest during the confrontation before fleeing the scene.
Robinson was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The incident was reported to the Riversdale police, and following investigations, McBeans was arrested and later charged after a question-and-answer session.
