Beat the summer heat

July 16, 2019
Eating fruits can help you beat the heat.

Jamaica, the land of wood and water, and the SUN! I don’t know about you, but I am struggling to keep my sanity in this heat.

Of course, living in Jamaica, we are no strangers to sunshine, but these past few weeks has felt as if the sun has moved permanently to Jamaica.

I keep singing the mega hit from Third World in my head, “96 degrees in the shade. Real hot! In the shade”.

Living in this type of heat has some challenges, especially for women, because in addition to the discomfort, we can actually get infections.

There are some things that can be done to provide some relief from the heat as we try to get through another record-breaking summer:

n Wear breathable underwear. Cotton, bamboo, hemp are great fabric choices. Don’t worry, you can get sexy and comfortable. Feel free to go ‘commando’ as well – not wearing underwear reduces the amount of laundry you have to do and it’s really comfortable.

n Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water (coconut water is a great option as well). Lower your consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks, especially if you’re outside.

n Wear comfortable shoes. Open-toe sandals are a great option, and don’t forget to get your pedicure on.

n Dresses are just easier to get in and out of and they are comfortable. Go for light and flowing fabrics like cotton, and try a relaxed fit. Plus, they allow some ventilation. This is a great opportunity to ditch the waist trainer and allow your body to breath comfortably.

n Snack on fruits. Put them in the fridge first and let them get cool. It’s healthy, delicious, and a great way to beat the heat.

n Lose the big handbag. It’s too hot to be carrying around the entire world! Keep it light, try a fanny pack. They are making a comeback and they are cute! Plus, it leaves your hands free to enjoy a cool beverage.

n Smoothies beat these heavy, hot lunches.

As we make it through another summer, let’s pay attention to our bodies and take precautions for maximum comfort. Don’t forget to use sunscreen, and don’t send too much time in the direct sunlight. Take some time to enjoy our beautiful rivers and beaches while you’re at it. Have a great summer and try to stay cool.
