As he celebrates the life of his friend Gary 'Clapboss' Richards, who passed away recently, dancehall artiste Strykk has penned the song, 21 Gun Salute.

"This song was inspired by a reflection of friends and families I've lost along the way, and in 2019 I had an idea to write and record a RIP song. Clapboss was also influential in the process and admired the concept because he, too, lost loved ones along the way. I then recorded it as a demo in 2022 for my grandmother, Mama Vicky, who passed away," he explained.

"A few weeks ago, I partnered with Blonko Records and 343muzik to officially record and release the song as a tribute to Gary, who passed away. He was a brother, friend, fashion designer, business partner to me, and a father figure to many," he said.

Strykk said he pulled on childhood memories, as the lyrics reflected the experiences they had as children, picking fruits from the neighbours' trees and hiding from their parents.

"This should be a beacon of courage and inspiration to others who have experienced the loss of a loved one," he said, explaining that he will put plans in place to ensure that Richards' legacy lives on.

"He was a fashion designer and made most of my gear, so everywhere I turn, whether at home or in the streets, there is something to remind me. I still go by his place and keep a close contact with his kids and family. His brand was well renowned, as he produced a catalogue of garments for both genders; I will continue wearing the brand as long as possible," he said.

Strykk said that there are plans to start a foundation in Richards' name "to honour his legacy and ensure we give back to the youths, encouraging them to learn a skill".

"Even if it's not fashion, like Clap, but something constructive. As the acronym for CLAP suggests, we will continue to 'celebrate life and people'. We are in discussion with some corporate entities to partner with us in contributing beds and other resources to the May Pen Hospital," he added.
