Positive response to Mr World Jamaica - Country enters competition for first time in nearly 30 years
Twenty-six years after the country first entered the Mr World competition, Jamaica is back on the stage, and the organisers say that the response has been "very positive".
The competition is targeting men between the ages of 17 and 27 years old, who will be challenged on their mental prowess and physical fitness. Applications are now open and the elimination round takes place on Sunday, July 28. Co-franchise holders are Dahlia Harris and Weston Haughton, who also have the franchise for the Miss Jamaica World contest.
"The last time Jamaica entered Mr World was in 1998. We're bringing it back because we have seen the developmental benefits that the Miss World pageant has offered to our young ladies and we believe that our men should be given equal opportunities to gain international exposure while advancing their personal growth," Harris told THE STAR.
The response, Harris noted, has been "very positive from both prospective candidates and the general public".
"People are excited to see our men put not just their physical abilities on display but their love for community and their social advocacy. We hope that we can inspire the next generation of young Jamaican men to be positive contributors to national development," Harris shared.
Mr World 2024, the 11th edition of the competition, will happen in Vietnam from September 12-28. Jack Heslewood of England will crown his successor.
Jamaica entered the competition in its first staging and Richard Nevers, then 20 years old, placed fourth. In 1998, Mr World Jamaica, Kinte Thelwell, also placed fourth. All contestants will take part in a variety of competitions.
"The fast track events give you an idea of what they are looking for at the world level - talent, social advocacy, and someone who is articulate. There is a swimwear and top model competition and they also compete in an extreme sports challenge. This is the first year that they will be judged on a humanitarian project so their commitment to social change is very important," Harris added.
Finalists will be unveiled at an evening of elegance at Emancipation Park on August 4 and on Sunday, September 1, Mr World Jamaica will be crowned inside the ballroom of The Jamaica Pegasus hotel. The winner leaves on September 10 to participate in the finals.
