Schizophrenic tries to break into man's house

A young man who suffers from schizophrenia has been put on two years' probation.

This after he tried to enter a man's house minutes past midnight, claiming he was seeking refuge as he thought someone was chasing him.

Twenty-four-year-old Teswayne Williams underwent a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation and was deemed fit to answer to his charges, to which he pleaded guilty.

Reports are that on January 22, the complainant was at his Harbour View home watching a movie when he heard footsteps on his roof.

After pausing the movie to listen, he then heard his kitchen door being opened.

He also noticed someone pushing a hand through the kitchen window, opening the curtains.

The complainant reported that he hid inside his room and called a friend, who alerted the police.

The police reported that they arrived on the scene at about 12:40 a.m., and with the aid of a flashlight, the officer saw the accused at the side of the house, hiding under a step that leads to the roof.

Williams was taken into custody and cautioned about his offence and the consequences.

Upon his appearance in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Friday, Williams' lawyer explained his condition to the presiding judge, and added that she was not using it as an excuse for his crime.

In being mindful of William's mental condition, Judge Andrea Collins ordered that he seek therapy and rehabilitation, and learn a skill.
