Unity Primary and Infant School, a centre of excellence

Unity Primary and Infant School, which is situated in Bunkers Hill, Trelawny, has remained a shining example of academic excellence for well over a century.

The school, which first opened its doors in 1904 as a church-school, was operated out of the Unity Baptist Church in the neighbouring Unity before it was relocated to its current site in 1965. At present, the school has 150 students enrolled.

While the school has produced many students who have made their mark nationally, for the residents of Bunkers Hill, the school 's greatest claim to fame is that it is the alma mater of distinguished academic, the late Professor Rex Nettleford.

According to senior teacher Hilda Peart-Reid, the school is currently quite strong in academics, performing exceptionally well in the recently held Grade Four Literacy and Numeracy Test and the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT).

"For the Grade Four Literacy Test, the students mastered it. The national average was 87 per cent and the children did well. They did well in the GSAT also," said Peart-Reid. "They got placed at traditional high schools, to include Herbert Morrison Technical High School and Montego Bay High School for Girls, Holland High School, William Knibb High School, and Muschett High School."

Besides regular class work, the students at Unity Primary and Infant School are also steeped in extra-curricular activities as there are a number of academic and other clubs in the school.

"We have the 4-H Club, the Mathematics Club, and the Book Club, and we also have the Language Club," said Peart-Reid.
