Murder accused gets bail

A St James woman, who allegedly killed her boyfriend by stabbing him in the groin after finding him with another woman, was offered bail when she appeared in the St James Parish Court last Friday.

Sutania Levy, a cashier of a Mt Salem address, is charged with murder in relation to the death of Joel Hanson, with whom she was said to be in a relationship.

Allegations are that on August 26, Levy went to Hanson’s house and saw him there with another woman.

An argument ensued and swiftly got physical, and during the struggle, Levy stabbed Hanson in the right side of his groin.

Hanson was taken to hospital, where he died the following day. Levy was subsequently taken into custody and charged.

In making a bail application on Friday, Levy’s attorney Tamika Spencer-Anderson told presiding judge Sandria Wong-Small that her client had no previous convictions.

The prosecution offered no opposition to bail, only requesting that Levy be given reporting conditions and that she should not interfere with the witnesses in the case.

It was also disclosed that the post-mortem report and a scene of crime statement were outstanding from the case file.

Wong-Small subsequently offered J$750,000 bail with three sureties, and ordered her to report to the police twice a week.

The matter will be mentioned on November 1.
