Man beaten with his own walking stick

A St James man who allegedly used a walking stick to beat another man for insulting him managed to avoid jail time after compensating the complainant in the St James Parish Court last Wednesday.

Gary Dobson, of a Mt Carey address, was brought before the court on the charge of unlawful wounding.

Allegations are that on September 26, Dobson and the complainant got into a dispute along Barnett Street. Dobson grabbed the complainant's walking stick and used it to hit him all over his body, breaking the stick in the process, and then used a piece of it to stab the complainant.

In court, Dobson told presiding judge Sandria Wong-Small that the altercation happened when the complainant hurled a derogatory insult at him.

"I was going up the street, and he (complainant) was coming and said 's**k you mother' and he lick me on the hand with the stick, and I took the stick and lick him back," said Dobson.

"Do you know him?" Wong-Small asked Dobson, referring to the complainant.

"No ... all now I don't know his name," said Dobson.

Meanwhile, the complainant said he wanted Dobson to compensate him for his medical expenses.

"I'd like him to give me back J$20,000, and my medical report is here," said the complainant, holding up the document for all to see.

"I'm making a mediation order in the matter," Wong-Small answered, before briefly standing the case down for the parties to hold further discussions.

The case was eventually settled after Dobson agreed to reimburse the complainant, and a no-evidence motion was made before Dobson was allowed to leave the courtroom.
