Man’s arm injured during stoning

A St James man who allegedly threw stones at another man and injured his arm was offered bail when he appeared in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday, despite concerns about whether he had other charges pending before the court.

Twenty-five-year-old Robert Headley, of an Orange address, is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court was told that Headley and the complainant were involved in an altercation in the Mt Salem community, during which Headley reportedly threw stones and hit the complainant, and that Headley had been in police custody since October 20.

Additionally, the complainant showed up in court with a large cast on his arm as proof of his injury.

During Headley's bail application, judge Wong-Small asked the defendant's attorney, Dalton Reid, whether Headley had been charged with any other offenses.

"Is this the only matter that Mr Headley is here for? Because his name was on the remand list for a while, and I was told he was to stand in an identification parade," said Wong-Small.

"I was told that this was the only matter he had pending. I know of no other charge and was told of no other charge," Reid replied.

Meanwhile, the prosecution indicated that it was not opposed to bail as long as Headley stayed away from Mt Salem.

Wong-Small subsequently offered bail to Headley in the sum of $250,000 with three sureties and ordered him to report to the police once a week.

"You're not to have any contact with the complainant, and you're not to visit Mt Salem while you're on bail. If you breach your conditions, your bail can be taken away," Wong-Small warned Headley before setting the case for continuation on January 17.
