A St James man, who admitted to beating another man for attacking his daughter, was fined $10,000 when he appeared in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday, May 22.

Devon McGhie pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm when his case was mentioned before presiding judge Kacia Grant.

While the prosecution's allegations were not outlined to the court, McGhie told Grant that on April 27, the day when the incident occurred, his babymother told him that the male complainant had attacked McGhie's daughter sometime earlier.

"Your Honour, I got a call from my babymother that this man came in drunk and assaulted my daughter. I went to the house and woke him up and asked him what he did, and I asked him six times, and I was so vexed," said McGhie.

"So that's why you hit him?" asked Grant.

"Yes, Your Honour," McGhie replied.

"Today, you're going to pay a big fine. You'll pay $10,000 or spend 20 days in prison," Grant told McGhie, before he was subsequently led out of the courtroom by police officers.
