‘I will fix all the roads in Jamaica for free’ - St Andrew man filling potholes with stones in a bid to save lives

When travelling from Constant Spring to Stony Hill in St Andrew, there are some obvious potholes along the way. Some are so deep that if you make the mistake of falling into one, your car is going to need some serious repairs.

Leonardo Cushnie, a man who has repaired his front end numerous times because of these potholes, has decided to do something about them. He has been collecting stones and packing them into the potholes in the hope that he can make travelling a little bit more comfortable for fellow motorists.

"Mi have my likkle ol' car yah, mi caa manage fi see it a drop inna the hole dem. The front end gone so bad till it a cry like how me a cry - like a baby - so it nuh mek no sense me pass them. If the rest of citizens don't see it to do, mi wi do it," he said.

Cushnie, 51, told THE WEEKEND STAR that he used to perform a similar deed in the Above Rocks community in St Andrew.

"These potholes look like they are going to create disaster, so if I can save a life by doing this, then I will because I may just be saving my own. I am not fixing all of them at once, just the ones that appeal to me, because some of them so deep that I wonder how far I can see in it," he said.

Cushnie said that if he were given the chance and the materials, he would fix all the roads in Jamaica free of cost.

"I don't have a selfish outlook on life, enuh, because what I do may benefit other people, which, in turn, benefits me. Because by doing this, it may stop some accident for another person and stop an accident from happening to me," he said.
