Head of the St Elizabeth Police Division, Deputy Superintendent Narda Simms, is urging Jamaicans to take note of the recent conviction of dancehall artiste Laden.

Laden, given name Okeefe Aaron, pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of illegal possession of firearm and illegal possession of ammunition when he appeared in the St Elizabeth Circuit Court. Simms said Laden's case is not just a warning for entertainers, but for Jamaicans in general.

A precedenT to all criminals

"It will be a precedent to all criminals that if you carry an illegal firearm and you are caught, then you will go to prison," Simms said.

According to police reports, Laden was arrested on the night of October 28 after the Mercedes-Benz he was travelling in was signalled to stop by the police. The driver, reportedly Laden, sped off and the police gave chase. During the chase, an object was reportedly thrown through the vehicle's sunroof.

The police caught up with the occupants of the vehicle, arrested them and took them back to the area where the object was thrown.

The area was searched and a Hi-point 9mm pistol with a magazine containing one 9mm round of ammunition was reportedly recovered by the police.

Laden's co-accused, Saaion Ebanks, 21, and a 16-year-old male were acquitted when they appeared in court on Monday.
