West Indies opener Shai Hope plays a shot during his innings of 110 against Sri Lanka in the first ODI in Antigua yesterday.

West Indies ODI captain Kieron Pollard says his team executed the plans well on the day following the team's impressive eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the opening one-day international at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua yesterday.

The West Indies, on the back of a fine century from Shai Hope and 65 from opener Evin Lewis, made light work of Sri Lanka's total of 232 all out in 49 overs.

Hope stroked a masterful 110 from 133 balls to bring up his 10th one-day international hundred. His knock included 12 fours and one six, as he and Lewis put on a whopping 143 runs for the first wicket.

Hope, who has a knack for scoring runs against Sri Lanka, was pleased with his effort after being out of the team for more than a year.

"I just love batting. Honestly, I like spending time out in the middle and bat for long. The key is just staying out as long as possible for the team and to bring the game home, I wasn't able to do it today but that is the aim, "said Hope.

Hope fell with the West Indies 18 runs shy of the target, however, Darren Bravo with an unbeaten 37 and Jason Mohammed, 13, saw the regional side home at 236 for two in the 47th over.

BAGGED TWO WICKET

Earlier, Jason Holder and Mohammed bagged two wickets each, to restrict the Sri Lankans to 232, after they were cruising at 105 for 1 in the 20th over.

Captain Pollard, who was involved in the first two wickets to fall, praised the efforts of his batters and the resoluteness shown in the field.

"The way we batted and even the way Shai batted was amazing. The partnerships were impressive and it shows that we planned and came out with good execution. The guys upped the intensity in the field after they were 100 without loss, and, eventually, that push at the top ensured that we stifled their batting innings. I think the way we fielded was good but there were a few fumbles. Overall, however, we were quite good and us older players need to continue to lead the way and set an example," said Pollard.

The teams will square off in the second ODI at the same venue on Friday.
