Family puzzled as elderly man and caregiver go missing
It has been close to nine months since Roxanne Herbert heard or saw her father, Barrington Herbert.
The elder Herbert, who hails from Hampton Drive in Spanish Town, St Catherine, was last seen at home on March 27. Roxanne said she believes her father is alive and is imploring the public's assistance in locating him.
Speaking with THE STAR yesterday, Roxanne said her 84-year-old father suffers from dementia so the family had sought the assistance of a caregiver, Dawn McKoy, three months earlier. She said on the day he went missing, McKoy told them that she was taking him for a walk but neither of them returned.
"She told my mother that they would return soon, but neither of them came back. I don't know the address of the caregiver but when I called the number, she didn't answer. The caregiver was referred to us by a family member. All I want to know is where my father is and get some closure. He is not in his right mind because he suffers from dementia and as a result, he isn't able to make conscious decisions," she said. Roxanne said that the family also doesn't know McKoy's family.
Herbert is of fair complexion and about 145 pounds. His mode of dress at the time of his disappearance is unknown. Roxanne stressed that while she is able to deal with the pain of not being able to locate her father, her mother, 72-year-old Mary-Ann Herbert, is not coping.
"My mother isn't taking it well at all because this is the first time they would have been apart this long. She has lost weight drastically and she cries very often. They have been together for almost 40 years and married for 25, so they are like one. I have been suffering from insomnia since because I really don't know what happened. But I know someone is hiding something. I just want to know where my dad is," Roxanne said.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Barrington Herbert or Dawn McKoy is being asked to contact the Spanish Town police at 876-984-2305 or 119.
