Man says wife used obeah to steal his money

Convinced that his estranged wife has 'tied' him and bled his finances, a St Catherine man is now searching for ways to recoup millions of dollars he said that she spent.

The man told THE STAR that he was in 'spiritual bondage' for the 24 years of his marriage, before he was finally set free after religious leaders prayed for his deliverance.

"When a person tie yuh, you are a prisoner, yuh can't guh no where. Mi under witchcraft. All mi go is work and mi yard, is like mi can't go anywhere else. One time, every minute she use to come and play inna mi hair and a say she like it, but dem time deh a di obeah oil she a rub off in deh," he said.

The man said that his wife seemed like an angel of light when he met her more than two decades ago, but it didn't take long for him to realise that she was up to no good. He told THE STAR that he fears her as she often partakes in obeah rituals and threatens to unleash demons on him.

"A nuff time mi lay down and mi feel the side a di bed sink down and when mi look, mi nuh see nobody. Suh a duppy dat man. A nuff time it reach mi and mi can't bawl out. Mi wife have a little black hardcover book with some verse whe mi know nuh inna di Bible," he said.

The man said that one night, after he slept in the living room because they had a fight, his wife vowed to have a friend kill him.

"Mi never understand what she mean. Mi did have a friend whe drop out [died] and mi a tell yuh say mi lie down and mi literally see him come stand up in front a mi vex. Mi ask him whe him deh pon and him just disappear. Afterwards, she come in di room and tell mi say a lucky mi lucky," he added.

The scared man said that whenever he shares his bizarre experiences with others, he is often labelled as a liar.

"The devil is a woman and she is my wife. She tie mi and take off all a mi money offa mi bank card dem. She use mi money and all build house fi har family dem and buy truck gi man. De tings here a wickedness and she need to pay fi all a what she do mi," he said.

Despite the man's claims, he admitted that his estranged wife has taken out a restraining order against him. In the court document, the woman claims she was being constantly harassed by the man, who is now declaring himself to be the victim. She has also accused him of being abusive.

The man, however, stated that her accusations are all lies and that she had found a way to manipulate the justice system.

Attorney-at-law Bert Samuels said once the husband had given his wife permission to withdraw money from his account, there is no recourse for him.

"Obeah cannot be used as an excuse if he had given her permission. If he had not given her consent to do so, then she would have stole it and then there could be a criminal offence," he said.
