Men fined $20,000 for dumping coconut shells

Two Corporate Area men who were spotted by the police throwing 15 bags of coconut shells onto the roadway were fined $20,000 or three months' imprisonment in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday.

Michael Bennett and Floyd Bennett both pleaded guilty to breaching section 46 (i) of the National Solid Waste Management Act. It was shared that, in November 5, the police, while travelling in the Corporate Area, saw the men with 15 rice bags containing coconut shells. The men were seen throwing the contents of the bags along the main road.

"That is bad for the environment," Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque said. - T.T.
