33 murders since Jan 1

The police have released its first serious crime report for the New Year which shows that 33 murders have been committed as at January 13.

This means that homicides are on par year on year.

There are 19 police divisions in Jamaica, 13 of which have one or more murders since the start of the year.

The St James police division, which lead the country in murders for back-to-back years, has had an 80% increase in murders so far with nine people killed.

This is followed by St Ann with a 100% increase with five homicides as at the period under review.

Trelawny, St Mary, Clarendon, Kingston Western, St Andrew North and St Thomas police divisions have zero murders.

Shootings have increased by 50% with 39 incidents.

There is also an increase in the number of injured persons, with 32 reports compared to 20 the previous year.

There is a decline in rape and robbery.
