Teens charged for home robbery
A 14-year-old girl is currently before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court facing allegations that she stole more than $100,000 from her neighbour's home.
The teen is charged with larceny from the dwelling, while her co-accused, 19-year-old Jashawn Brown, was charged with receiving stolen property. It is alleged that the 14-year-old went to the complainant's house and removed $134,000 and US$1,200 (approximately J$189,000) from the dresser. The complainant noted that only US$200 (approximately J$31,562) and $64,000 was returned to him since the incident.
"Me only get US$100 and change it for $14,000 and me give it back to the man [Brown]," the teen said when cautioned. But a critical issue was brought to the fore on Thursday when the matter was mentioned before Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell, as prosecutors indicated that the case file was not complete. A statement from the arresting officer to indicate how Brown and the teens were apprehended was not recorded.
The matter was adjourned until January 14, 2025 for file completion. However, the 14-year-old's guardian was warned to steer her from trouble.
"She needs monitoring and if she is being disobedient, she will force the government to step in," the senior judge said.
