J'can Windies U-19 stars return home

Fast bowling all-rounder, Odean Smith, said it was a matter of giving it their best shot why the West Indies are ICC Under-19 World Cup champions.

"As a team, we decided that we are going to go out there, and decided to give it our best shot, and I think we did well," Smith said on his return to Jamaican shores yesterday along with his two other Jamaican teammates, Michael Frew, and Shahid Crooks.

The three, members of the regional 15-member squad were all beaming on their arrival at the Norman Manley International Airport.

Accompanied by gear and equipment, traveling bags, memorabilia, as well as their gold medals, the trio was also fEted by West Indies sponsors, Digicel.

For this, Smith, who along with off-spinning all-rounder Michael Frew and batsman Shahid Crooks, spoke briefly, expressing their satisfaction.

"It's good to know that we have done ourselves and the region proud, and you guys have come out and give us your appreciation," he said. "We are grateful."

The ceremony, during which they were presented with mobile handsets by Digicel also saw the trio being showered with praises from the West Indies Cricket Board and the Jamaica Cricket Association.

"We're just trying to put back West Indies where it is supposed to be," said Crooks during his speech.

"We have just started, but it is a long road, and I have put up my hands and will be there in the end," he added.

Frew, who played more matches during the World Cup than Crooks and Smith, also expressed appreciation for the support the team has achieved.

"First, and foremost, I want to thank God for the victory," he said.

"I want to say thanks for all the support as without all your support, this would not have happened."

The West Indies got the better of fancied India by five wickets in the final.
