T&T's Lewis is one for the future

To most local cricket fans, the name Evin Lewis may not ring a bell. However, to those close to the sport the young Trinidad and Tobago opening batsman is one for the future.

Starting his career seven years ago as a 17-year-old, the former West Indies Under-19 representative impressed in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20 two years ago, and has since become a sought after player in the format.

Recently, he was selected to participate in the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 and scored his maiden Twenty20 100 for Barisal Bulls, a team which included West Indian Chris Gayle.

This was then followed by a fairly successful WICB Super50 one-day tournament where in helping Trinidad and Tobago Red Force lift the crown, Lewis scored his first one-day century.

But that was not all for the 24-year-old, as last weekend, playing in his fourth game of the WICB first-class league, he hit a stroke-filled 104 against the Scorpions at Sabina Park, for his maiden first-class ton.

"My goal is to play Test cricket, so I want to just keep working, and keep scoring runs in first-class cricket," stated Lewis, who also, 87 in the first innings of the matchup, which was won by the Red Force.

"This is my fourth game as I sat out three games this season due to the T20 league in Bangladesh.

"Now that I have come back, I hope that I will be able to keep on scoring runs, and end up with the most runs for my team."

"I have been playing at this level for the last four to five years now, so it is important that I step up," Lewis said.
