Nanthan: Sammy's comments unfortune

West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) vice-president Emmanuel Nathan has described as unfortunate the comments made by West Indies captain, Darren Sammy, after the final of the ICC World Twenty20 on Sunday.

In his post-match interview following the West Indies' pulsating four-wicket win over England in Kolkata, India, Sammy said that it was "disappointing" the support the team had received from the WICB heading into, and during the month-long tournament.

The former West Indies Test and one-day skipper, also explained, that this was in contrast to heads of governments of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), who throughout the event offered words of encouragement and motivation. He added that they felt disrespected by 'our board'.

However, Nanthan, a diplomat in Dominica, and deputy to WICB president, Jamaican Dave Cameron, said Sammy's remarks were untimely and inappropriate.

"I would say the comments by the captain at that moment in time was quite unfortunate," Nanthan told STAR Sports.

"There is a time and a place for everything."

He continued: "The thing about it, as well, is that I met a lady, who said while the West Indies were batting, she had her bible in her hand, and was on her knees praying for the team.

"She then said, shortly after the win, and on hearing the comments made by Sammy, she didn't want anything to with West Indies cricket.

"And, that's just a fan. Not an administrator or anyone involved with West Indies cricket, who felt so let down.

"What has happened with the men, women and West Indies Under-19s winning three world titles in such a short space of time is very rare and remarkable. No praise is too much for them," Nanthan added.
