T20 experience key for Windies - Coley

Jamaican Andre Coley, assistant coach of the West Indies, has listed the power-hitting abilities of the players as well as experienced gained in playing Twenty20 leagues around the world as key to the team recapturing the ICC World Twenty20 title.

The West Indies, after winning three of four preliminary-round matches, defeated host India by seven wickets in the semi-finals before going on to topple England in the final by four wickets last week.

"Our ability to strike the ball cleanly and consistently.That is what makes us unique," said Coley.

"One of the best ways of keeping the scoreboard ticking over is rotating the strike, singles, running hard for the second run, and so on. But if you look at all the teams, they would actually have one or two players who are big hitters," he added.

"We actually have more, who can do it consistently and well, and that was really our strength, and that's what we played to," Coley said.

The former West Indies 'A' and West Indies Under-19 coach, who is also a head coach of the West Indies High Performance Centre, in outlining the importance of the players' Twenty20 experience, highlight that it made the team versatile.

"When you look at the composition of the team, we had quite a few international players, who ply their trade around the world in the T20 format," said Coley. "They have a very good understanding of how the game should be played and how they want to play."

DIFFERENT ROLES

Meanwhile, Coley also explained the roles he and other members of the coaching and management staff played in helping the team.

"Our role was just to facilitate their preparation, be a springboard for them, and keep them in a positive frame of mind approaching each game," Coley said.

The coaching staff is completed by head coach Phil Simmons, fellow assistant coach Stuart Williams, and bowling consultant Curtly Ambrose.
