Scorpions suffer stinging defeat

Jamaica Scorpions has fallen to one of their worse defeats in first-class cricket. The Robert Samuels-coached delegation achieved the feat on Sunday following a 34-run defeat to bottom-of-the-table Leeward Islands Hurricanes at Sabina Park.

Needing to score 149 in their second innings to win on the third day of the Digicel WICB Four-day Tournament, an encounter which lost the entire first day due to rain, Jamaica were bowled out for 114, shortly after tea.

This was to go with their team record-low 56 runs in the first innings. The Leewards in their two batting displays made 71 and 133.

Leading the way for the Leewards was recent West Indies fast bowling recruit Alzarri Joseph. He claimed five for 43.

Enterprising pace all-rounder Jeremy Louis, who claimed four for four in the first innings, was the next best with four for 23.

Batsman Jermaine Blackwood, the only Jamaican batsman to offer any resistance, topscored with 47. The next best batter was fast bowler Jerome Taylor, 19.

It was the Scorpions third defeat of the season with three rounds of matches to go in the 10-round tournament.
