Calabar and Excelsior High schools are the early leaders in the Digicel Anthrick Corporate Area Development meet after 14 finals were completed on Day One, yesterday at the National Stadium.

Calabar amassed 72 points, outscoring arch- rivals Kingston College by six points. Excelsior, however, are way ahead in the girls section, scoring 94 points. Wolmer's High School for Girls are in second on 56 points.

Several records were broken on day one with the ever improving Evaldo Whitehorne of Calabar leading the way in the 400m for Class 2 boys. Whitehorne stopped the clock at 47.51 seconds to erase his teammate Anthony Carpenter's old mark of 48.89 seconds, done in 2015.

Kingston College's Shanthamoi Brown also ran faster than the previous mark with 48.46.

In the Class 1 boys 400m, Kingston College's Dashawn Morris lowered the record to 46.69. The Calabar duo of Shemar Chambers and reigning ISSA GraceKennedy Boys 400m champion, Christopher Taylor also went under the mark of 48.36 done in 2016.

Calabar's Kimar Farquharson ran 1:53.95 seconds to break the 800m Class 1 boys record.

In the 100m, Terrique Stennett of Kingston College, who won the event in Class 3 at Champs last year, was impressive in his heat. The first time Class 2 athlete cruised to 10.87 seconds.

JOINT FASTEST TIME

In the Class 1 boys, the Calabar pair of Michael Stephens and Tyreke Wilson were outstanding. Wilson, who is coming off an injury and was running first time this season, has the joint fastest time of the day at 10.49, with Kimani Gardener of Excelsior.

Stephens won his heat comfortably in 10.59.

Speaking after his race, Stephens said: "Tomorrow the aim is to just go out there and ensure that both of us qualify for the Grand Prix Finale. The season is looking bright so far, and the main objective is to defend my title at Champs."

Wilson was elated to be back on track. "I missed out a lot of weeks of training. It is only within the last two weeks I resumed training, so I am kind of rusty. I am just happy that I am able to run without any injuries," Wilson said.

The meet continues today at 9 a.m.
