Davis set sights on World Under-20 gold

She is ready to make amends for false starting in the 100 metres of the Class Three girls final last year but Edwin Allen High School's star sprinter Kevona Davis wants more.

Davis has revealed that next week's ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships is a stepping stone to achieving her main goal of the season, gold in the 200 metres at the World Under-20 Championships in July.

A first year Class Two athlete, Davis won the sprint double at Carifta Trials two weeks ago beating Class One athletes. She took the 100m in 11.63 seconds and the 200m in 23.11.

She also broke the meet record for Under-20 girls 200m at the Digicel Grand Prix Final at the National Stadium last Saturday, running 23.13.

COMPETITIVE NATURE

"World Juniors is my main aim this year but I have to do well at Champs because that's how coach[ Michael Dyke] will decide who trains for World Juniors," Davis told STAR Sports.

Davis, a native of Gayle in St Mary, said her competitive nature is what makes her compete with athletes older than her so fiercely.

"I really don't like to lose. So it does not matter if I am running against people who are older than me," Davis said.

Davis won a bronze medal in the 100m at the World Under-18 championships in Nairobi, Kenya, last year.

She is highly favoured to win the Class Two sprint double at next week's Boys and Girls' Championships next week.
