Steele crashes out of Class Three 200m

Holmwood Technical High's Sashieka Steele, the pre-meet favourite to win the sprint double in Class Three, is one of the first big casualties of the 2018 ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships.

Steele, who equalled the Class Three 100m record last year, crashed out of the 200 metres in the preliminary round yesterday after sustaining a hamstring injury before the race.

Steele, who looked well below her best, finished fourth in a time of 26.05 seconds. The time was not fast enough to qualify for the semi-finals.

Her coach, Dave Anderson, said the team's medical staff will assess the athlete and determine if she will take any further part in the championships.

"I'm not sure of the extent of the injury at this stage but we are doing some assessment and then we will decide if she will continue to compete in the championships," Anderson said.

He added: "In the warm up she looked perfectly well then just a bit before she went out I saw her on the massage table saying she was feeling a little cramp and that is why she performed like how she did in the race. She is in a bit of pain, we will have to see."
