Mayor calls for more support of Portmore United
Mayor of Portmore, Leon Thomas, is imploring constituents to embrace Portmore United as their own team, as the club has represented the community well by winning six Premier League titles, four of which came since the team relocated to the Sunshine City.
Portmore United beat Waterhouse on penalties on Monday, to claim their sixth title after winning the regular season by 16 clear points.
"The team is made up of Portmore based players, the team bears the name of the community and it is from the municipality. The residents of Portmore need to own the team like any other community," Thomas told STAR Sports.
After the victory on Monday, many residents admitted to STAR Sports that they did not feel jubilant about the team's win.
"I live in Portmore for many years now and Portmore is not my side," Leon Stephens said. "They need to do more to engage the community. They are not doing anything towards promoting their football team."
He continued: "First of all, they don't play their home games here. In places like Waterhouse and Arnett Gardens, the community watches training and know the team."
Thomas acknowledged that the team's inability to play in the community may have contributed to the community's lack of interest.
Portmore has not played a game on their home ground Ferdie Neita Park in over four seasons.
Thomas said that he will be meeting with the executive of the team in the coming weeks to get the team back to playing in the municipality.
"I have a meeting next week with the officials from the team to see if we can get the team playing their home games in Portmore again," Thomas said.
