'Keep trying' - Evans implores struggling athletes to persevere

After overcoming numerous setbacks in her career before winning her first major medal at the senior level last month, Gayon Evans is imploring struggling athletes to persevere through hard times and remain positive throughout their careers.

"I would say to them to stay positive and be patient, because I understand that it can be very depressing at times," Evans said. "Even last year when I had a good indoor season, I had my setbacks when the outdoor season came around."

Evans was the 2017 winner of the IAAF World Indoor Tour series in the women's 60m. She followed up that impeccable season with a personal best in the 100m of 11.22 seconds, which was registered at the Commonwealth Games, where she won a bronze medal.

"There are many times when you just feel like giving up, but you just have to continue to do the right things, like eating healthy and getting enough rest," Evans said.

The diminutive athlete said that it is also important to have a good support system behind you.

Support system important

"I remember when I was at college in the US and they (college officials) wouldn't care about you. I was on my own. But, now that I am back, closer to home, I have that support system and it is really important," said the former University of Maryland Eastern Shore athlete.

As she continues her season, Evans pointed out staying healthy as an important factor if she is going to continue to improve.

"If I stay healthy, I know I will continue to progress," Evans said.

Evans will line up with the likes of Christania Williams, Natasha Morrison and Blessing Okagbare in the 100m at the Jamaica International Invitational on May 19 at the National Stadium.
