Simpson targets World Champs medal before retirement

Sherone Simpson, the 2008 Olympic 100m silver medallist, said her illustrious track and field career is missing one thing.

And, it is this missing piece which is preventing the 34 year old from retiring to the role of full-time mom to her daughter, Leanna.

"I have not won an individual medal at the World Championships," Simpson told STAR Sports earlier this week. "I am aiming to win that medal at the World Championships next year."

Simpson, who returned to the sport in January after giving birth, said she is using this season to round herself back into competitive shape to achieve her 2019 target. And, her training thus far has suggested that she is on par to do so.

"I have been training well and I am really looking forward to competing. I know that with how my training has been going, I should be running pretty good times," Simpson said of her commitment to run at the Jamaica International Invitational on May 19 and other meets this season.

At the peak of her career, Simpson was the fastest woman on earth. That season, 2006, she won a gold medal in the 200m at the Commonwealth Games and ran personal best times of 10.82 and 22.00 seconds in the 100 and 200ms.

The former Manchester High School athlete admitted that she may not get back down to those times, as she has passed the peak of her career. But, she believes that she will be competitive enough to meet her target.
