Resolute ...Facey determined to medal at major championships

Coming out of school, Simone Facey was one of the brightest young prospects in track and field.

But almost 10 years into her senior career, Facey has failed to win an individual medal at a major global championship. But the diminutive sprinter is determined to deliver that promise before she calls time on her career.

"That is always my plan from day one - to be on the podium in an individual event," Facey told STAR Sports after finishing last in the 200m at the Jamaica International Invitational Meet on Saturday at the National Stadium. "I just want to focus on finishing this season healthy and get ready for the World Championships next year."

She said: "My goal is try to make it to another World Championships and see if I can make it to 2020 (Tokyo Olympics), but I am just going to take it one day at a time, one year at a time."

Facey attributed a nagging hamstring injury to her lacklustre performance at the weekend.

"Actually, I have an injury that I am trying to get over. I am not 100 per cent healthy. I missed a whole month of training. I am like 50 per cent right," Facey pointed out.

Facey ran under 11 seconds in the 100m, coming out of Texas A&M University. She is also among a handful of athletes to have run under 23 seconds while still in high school.
