Grace dished nearly a mil to Champs record breakers

GraceKennedy dished out $900,000 to the record breakers from this year's ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletic Championships at the third staging of the Champs Record Breakers Awards Luncheon at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel last Friday.

The student-athletes received $30,000 for each of the 30 records that were shattered at Champs this year, with an agreement for the money to be used to fund school projects.

Edwin Allen High School, the reigning girls champions, broke the most records with five.

Kevona Davis led the way with records in the 100 and 200m with times of 11.16 and 22.72 seconds, respectively. Outgoing Class 1 thrower Fiona Richards, in the shot put with 14.93m; the Class 3 girls' 4x100m with 44.71 seconds; and Peter Gaye McKenzie with a time of 24.08 seconds in the heptathlon were also records from the Frankfield-based institution.

Coach Michael Dyke said he is not sure what project the school will take on with the $150,000 that they have won, but he hopes it will go towards improving the track and field programme.

"I am not sure exactly what it is used for yet, but definitely something to benefit the programme," Dyke said. "When we go to Champs we don't normally have records in mind. We go to give good performances, but where the records come we accept them."

Hydel High School walked away with $120,000 for the four records they broke.

Kingston College had the most records on the boys' side with four.

They are Bouwahjgie Nkrumie in the Class 3 100m with 10.79; Adrian Kerr in the Class 3 200m with 21.69; the sprint medley with 3:24.22; and Aryamanya Rodgers in the 2000m steeplechase.
