RSPL Rumble: Gunning for glory!
Last season, the race for the most prolific striker in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) came down to wire as eventual winner, Craig Foster of Humble Lion secured the award with only a goal over Arnett Garden's Fabian Reid.
Foster tallied 17 goals to Reid's 16, while Jovan East of Portmore United grabbed 15.
The race for the award should be equally as close this season, as the main contenders from the past two seasons look to take their clubs to the top of local football.
Foster's performance last season cemented his status as a legitimate go to man for goals, as it was the second time he had tallied the most goals in the competition in three seasons. In the 2015-16 campaign, the 27 year-old netted 20 times for his old club FC Reno.
Dino Williams, who was Montego Bay United's go to man when the St James side won the premiership in 2014 and 2016, has vowed to be among the top scorers this season.
Ryan Miller's 12 goals for UWI FC last season proved not enough to get his side to the RSPL playoffs. This, according to him, has made him even hungrier for goals this coming season.
East's team, Portmore United, were crowned champions of local football when they beat Waterhouse FC on penalties in the final but it seems he will have to be even more prolific if his side is going to get back to the final as his partner in crime, Maalique Foster who shouldered some of the goal scoring duties, has taken up a season-long loan with LD Alajuelense in Costa Rica.
Reid was instrumental in Arnett Gardens' title chase last year and his club needs him to have a season like that again in order to remain as a contender.
But it is Kemar Beckford, who scored 12 times for Waterhouse last season, who has the opportunity to throw down the gauntlet, as he will be in action this Sunday for his new club Mount Pleasant Football Academy, who many experts around the league believe will contend for the title in their first season in top flight football.
