Rondee Smith promises more goals

Portmore United's Rondee Smith.

Few weeks ago, the unknown Rondee Smith grabbed national attention with two wonder goals against Harbour View in a Monday night Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) live game.

And the Portland native has continued to enhance his reputation as a lethal goalscorer locally, after scoring the winner from the penalty spot in a 3-2 win against Arnett Gardens on Sunday to take him top of the goal- scoring chart.

Smith admitted that the double he scored against Harbour View was a massive boost to his RSPL career, and that he is a bit surprised to be atop the goal-scoring chart at this stage of the season.

"In a sense (it means) a lot. I wouldn't expect four goals would be leading (scoring chart) at this time. But I am just putting in the work and trying to do as best as possible and try to score as much goals as possible.

"The goals at Harbour View were a big boost, knowing that I played an almost perfect game and it was a good start to the first game (season). So it came at a good time and it motivated me to go harder and do better each day," he said.

MORE THAN A GOAL A GAME

Although Smith could not promise spectacular goals every week, he assured that he intends to continue scoring goals, and wants to average more than one a goal a game for the first round.

"I scored beautiful goals like that before in Portland Major League. I can't really say (if I will score more), it just happened naturally based on how the game was being played. But you can expect more goals. We just have to stay focus and work hard each day.

"I have set the target for about 13 goals for the first round. I want to have an average more than the number of games I play. I just have to stay grounded and continue to work hard," he said.

Although his reputation is gradually growing, his focus is not to get a national call-up, but to improve on some areas of his personal game.

"That (national call) is not for me to decide. I will continue work and leave all of that to the selectors. I am not doing bad, but I know I can be better. I still have to be more clinical in front of goal, and on the defensively part of the game I want to get stronger. But it's okay thus far, although there is room for improvement," he added.
