Sewell determined to continue Calabar’s hurdles success

Points in the hurdles events have played a significant contribution to Calabar High School’s success over the last seven years at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boy’s and Girls’ Athletics Championships and the man behind that success is Sewell, who is in charge of the sprint hurdles programme at the school.

Sewell has been at Calabar for the past 10 years but has been in charge of the sprint hurdlers for the past six years.

“For the past four years, my hurdlers have been winning in Class One. I have the likes of Michael O’Hara, Sean Selvin, De’Jour Russell, and Orlando Bennett, who have all done well for us in recent times, and we hope to continue that trend ,” he said.

With main rival Kingston College throwing down the gauntlett this season with good results in all the classes, Sewell is hoping that his boys can repel the high flying hurdlers from KC.” Based on our programme, it is actually on the day of the championships you find the Calabar athletes stepping up to the plate. We have a very good group, so let’s see what happens on the day. Our guys always produce when it matters most and this attest to the programme we have, as Michael Clarke’s (head coach) programme is geared towards championships. It is not what you do during the development meets, but at championships and the programme peaks you for that.”

With Russell, the defending champion, and Schavon Carr expected to do well in Class One, Sewell was asked about his hurdlers in the other classes.” We are strong in Class One. In Class Two, there is David Thomas and Dishan Lamb, who should both score well, and I expect both athletes in Class Three, especially Michara O’Haro, who has improved big time, to perform when it matters most,”he said.
