Molynes confident of RSPL survival

Molynes United coach Calvert Fitzgerald is predicting that his team will put together a run of games in the third round of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) to secure their place in the top-flight for next season.

Molynes took the league by storm at the start of the competition after chalking up six straight victories in their debut season. But since then, the wheels have fallen off and they have only managed one win and three draws.

However, Fitzgerald, the man responsible for one of those three draws and their lone win since their fairy tale start to the season, believes the team is playing well enough to win games.

"Things are going to change," he said after their 2-0 defeat to Portmore United on Sunday. "We are going to go on a little run and I am very confident of that. We are so close but we just not getting it right. But I don't think we are going to go through the third round and don't go on a little run."

Fitzgerald said they have been competitive in most of the nine matches since he took over from Lijyasu Simms, who walked away after falling out with the management of the club, and believes that with a little adjustment, Molynes can secure some results.

"I thought we played much better than last Sunday (against Cavalier)," he said. "We played a much better match, where we played 28 minutes without conceding a goal and then we scored a goal on ourselves. After that, we dipped in form and then picked up back the game. We didn't get a goal, but it was an improved performance from last week.

"We have put in the work, but maybe we will have to make some more changes because we made a couple of changes today (Sunday) and it worked well for us. We just have to continue working because we are not far off. It's just the occasional game against Mount Pleasant (4-1 loss) and against Cavalier (4-0 loss), but we have been in games, as we have only been losing by a one goal margin or maximum two goals, so we are still there," he said.

Molynes sit in 10th place on 24 points, seven points clear of UWI and eight above Vere United in the relegation zone. Their next two fixtures put them against these direct rivals for survival and Fitzgerald predicts that the results in those matches will decide their fate.
