Defenders, GK earn point for Waterhouse

Waterhouse failed to get their Group A Caribbean Club Championship campaign off to a winning start last night after playing to a 0-0 draw with Cibao FC of the Dominica Republic at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Cibao controlled the first half, but failed to break down a well-organised Waterhouse defence, and in the end, coach Marcel Gayle was thankful for the point.

“We were a little tired at the end, but we stood up in defence. Give credit to Akeem Chambers in goal for us. He was our Man of the Match.

“But sometimes the game is like this and we are grateful for the point, as we could have lost it in the last minute,” he said.

Cibao’s best chance of the first half fell to Pablo Marisi, but he could not connect properly from six yards.

Waterhouse also had their chances, but Colorado Murray could not turn Stephen Williams’ cross on goal.

The visitors continued to control the game after the restart and Marisi came close after he dribbled through the Waterhouse defence, but he was shut out at the doorstep at the last minute.

Waterhouse came into their own briefly midway the half and had a few good looks at goal, but they could not make the chances count.

Ciboa regained control and put the home team on the back foot, but still could not find a way through the tough Waterhouse defence.

Keithy Simpson almost grabbed a late goal for Waterhouse with a flicked-on header that just missed the far post.

Marisi had a great chance in the 87th minute, but he dragged his shot just wide of the far post from 12 yards.

Two minutes later, Domy Remero slammed a shot against the bar from 30 yards.

Then with a minute to go, Chambers had to be quick off his line to snuff out Eduardo Rotondi, who broke through.

Cibao play Don Bosco of Haiti in their next game on Wednesday.

Waterhouse and Don Bosco close out the championship on Friday.
