Top juniors hunt places on Carifta squad

The three-day 2020 Carifta Trials starts this afternoon at the National Stadium. Leading Under-17 and Under-20 athletes will be hunting places on the country's team to next month's Carifta Games to be held in Hamilton, Bermuda, April 10-13.

Today's opening day will see eight field events finals, while on the track there will be the preliminary rounds of the 100m, 400m and 1500m in both age groups. The first event today is set for 4:30 p.m. The Under-17 and Under-20 girls will battle for top spots in the shot put. The other six field event finals are the long jump for Under-20 girls and high jump Under-17 boys set for 5 p.m. shot put Under-17 boys at 5:05 p.m., while at 6:15 p.m. it will be the Under-19 boys shot put. The high jump for Under-17 girls and the long jump for Under-20 boys will be on at 6:30.

The first track event will begin at 5 p.m. with the preliminary round of the Under-17 girls 400 metres. Among the top contenders in this event are Hydel High's Aaliyah Baker, Holmwood Technical's Rickiannn Russell, and Kacian Powell of Edwin Allen High.

Defending ISSA Boys and Girls' Championships Class Two 400m champion, Tahj Hamm of Holmwood Technical will head the Under-17 boys. He has a season's best of 47.80 seconds.

Preliminary round action in the Under-20 girls 400m will get under way at 5:30 p.m. but it is the boys' event which starts 15 minutes later which will attract the most attention. Calabar High's Evaldo Whitehorne, Excelsior High's Demar Francis, Kingston College's Tyrees Grant, and Vere Technical's Deandre Anderson and his teammate Tyrece Taylor, are some of the big names down to contest the event.

Edwin Allen High's ace sprinter Kevona Davis will be also in action today in the first round of the Under-20 100 metres starting at 7:25 p.m.. This will be her second outing in the event this season after opening up at the Ben Francis Invitational meet in 12.08 seconds running against a strong headwind.

Edwin Allen's twin sisters, Tia and Tina Clayton meet for the first time this season as both will be involved in the preliminary round of the Under-17 100m event along with teammate Serena Cole. This event is scheduled to begin at 6:50.

Racers Track Club's Oblique Seville, the defending Carifta champion in the 100m, will compete in the Under-20 100m at 7:40.
