Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein (second left) is congratulated by captain Jason Mohammed after taking a wicket for the West Indies against hosts Bangladesh in the opening One-Day International in Dhaka yesterday.

West Indies debutant spinner Akeal Hosein is urging the batting unit to put up a better showing in the second One-Day International (ODI) tomorrow. This is after the team lost by six wickets to hosts Bangladesh in the first ODI in Dhaka yesterday.

Hosein, who was one of six debutants for the West Indies, starred with the ball, bagging three for 26 from 10 overs in Bangladesh's score of 125 for four in 33.5 overs.

The left-arm Trinidadian spinner bowled opener Liton Das for his first international wicket, before claiming the scalps of Nazmul Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan.

Tamim Iqbal, with 44, was the top scorer for the hosts before he fell to captain Jason Mohammed.

Windies struggled

Earlier, the Windies struggled on the turning Dhaka pitch, and they could only muster 122 all out in 32.2 overs. The regional side was in tatters at 56 for five in the 19th over; however, a 59-run sixth-wicket partnership between Kyle Mayers, 44, and Rovman Powell, 28, rescued the West Indies innings from total embarrassment.

The left-handed Mayers hit four fours and a six in his knock, while Powell hit two fours and two sixes.

Jason Mohammed, with 17, and Andre McCarthy, with 12, were the only other West Indian batters that got into double figures, as Al Hasan ripped through the regional side batting, claiming four wickets for eight runs in 7.2 overs.

Medium pacer Hasan Mahmud bagged three for 28.

Hosein was pleased with his first outing in West Indies colours; however, he was disappointed that he could not complete the job for his team.

"I was happy with my performance. Having said that, not being able to take my team to victory will always be in the back of your mind," he said.

The left-arm spinner is hoping that the batsmen can quickly adapt to the spin-friendly conditions in Dhaka if they are to square the series tomorrow.

"I think we definitely need to put on a bigger score," Hosein said. "I don't think we batted well. It's just for us to give the bowlers something to work with and, hopefully, that happens in the next game."

Mayers, who was the top scorer in the West Indies innings, shared that sentiment.

"I think the batsmen need to buckle down a bit longer and read the situation and put a better score on the board so that the bowlers can fight," he said.

With the win, Bangladesh secured 10 points in the new ICC ODI Super League.
