A street in Gordon Pen, St Catherine, is to be named in honour of former national footballer Tremaine Stewart, who died suddenly in the community in mid-April.

The street proposed for the name change is Love Lane, where the former Reggae Boyz midfielder lived.

Councillor George Moodie gave notice of the motion during the monthly meeting of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation on May 13.

Chairman Norman Scott indicated that the motion could have been tabled, but Chief Executive Officer Andre Griffiths asked that it be done at June's meeting.

Deserving of the honour

Moodie said that Stewart had performed creditably to be deserving of the honour.

"He was a very good example for the youth, so although it's sad that he is not around, his name will live on," Moodie said.

Artist Paul Napier, a resident of the neighbouring Ensom City, endorsed the proposal to honour Stewart's legacy.

The 32-year-old died on April 18 after collapsing while playing football in his community.

Stewart made his mark at Eltham High School in St Catherine before kicking off his professional career.

He played for August Town Football Club from 2006 to 2008, Portmore United from 2008 to 2012, and again in 2016.

The midfielder also suited up for Waterhouse from 2014 to 2015 as well as for Rovaniemen Palloseura in Finland and Aalesund in Norway.

Stewart made 12 appearances for Jamaica, scoring two goals.
