A late goal gave Black River High a 1-0 win over Petersfield High in Zone D of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition at the Petersfield Sports Complex in Westmoreland yesterday.

Jaimen Williams struck the winner for Black River in the 90th minute in a game which could have gone either way.

Vayden Hayle, coach of Black River, said he wanted a clean sheet.

"In the first 16 minutes of the game we were very slow, Petersfield dominated a bit but at the 30th-minute mark we started to create some chances. We left it late but as the saying goes, better late than never," said Hayle.

He added: "We weren't clinical and it has shown this season. We got a sitter that it's easier to score than miss and the player did the opposite. We had to get the players mentally ready for today because we know we're playing a team that is above us. We wanted to at least get a draw but a victory was always in the plans."

Both teams were given multiple opportunities to take the lead but did not capitalise on them.

Disappointment of the Petersfield supporters was evident as they kept shouting unkind words to their players.

"Overall, I think we played well but it is a game that if you don't take chances it will come back to haunt you," Godfrey Drummond, coach of Petersfield said. "We created chances and opportunities but we kept Black River in the game far too long. In the end it was just a lapse of concentration that made them score a goal against us."

"It is really devastating to give up a goal so late in the game. Black River are a really good unit and if you give them the opportunity they are going to punish you," he told STAR Sports.

The result lifted Black River to seven points in Zone D. Petersfield are third on six points. Manning's School lead the zone with 10 points.
