Portmore’s Davis hungry for int’l return
Martin Davis is back in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL), where he started after spending most of his professional career overseas, but hopes his return is short, as he is hungry for the international scene.
The former St George's College Manning Cup standout, who is currently at Portmore United FC, said he is using the local league to relaunch himself.
"I was away from football for almost two seasons because of a FIFA case, so I came home, and this was somewhere where I had to start from scratch to ply my trade and prove myself again because of the missing time," Davis said.
The attacking midfielder was far from home after playing in Malta from 2017-2022.
The 27-year-old Davis understands that getting back in an international league will not be an easy fight.
"I control the variables I can control. Consistency is key. If I can continue throughout the season, who knows what I can do and where I can go," he said. "It starts game by game. I want to do everything I can to contribute to winning every game."
He contends that Portmore United will propel him to international recognition and growth.
"I feel a hundred per cent at home. We have a high ceiling, and I love the ambition, so this is the right place for me," he said. "I want to win. I want to win trophies. I am at that age. This is the perfect setting for me."
As for personal goals for the season, Davis said, "I leave all those end products up to God."
He said achieving any goal will be challenging, but he has no plans to back down.
"The conditions of the field and the weather conditions are much different from what I am used to, but I am a warrior, I am a soldier, I am used to struggle, I am used to fight, so it is nothing to me. I love this."
Davis said his ultimate goal is to be a part of the Reggae Boyz squad.
"One of my biggest dreams is to play in front of my family at the National Stadium. It's all about doing what I can do at Portmore first, and after good performances, I am sure I'll be hard to ignore," he said.
Davis was a part of Jamaica's Under-17 and Under-20 squads with four and five caps, respectively.
