Coach Butler is livid about embarrassment
Mona High's exuberant celebration on the compound of Jamaica College (JC) yesterday has been condemned by their Manning Cup coach, Craig Butler.
Mona celebrated their first Manning Cup title on Friday, beating Hydel High 1-0 in the final at the National Stadium.
They were in a celebratory mood yesterday morning as they took to the community's streets in a motorcade. Their joy grew in intensity in the vicinity of neighbours and Manning Cup stalwarts JC, with the vehicles stopping and people exiting and barging on the compound.
In a viral video, individuals in one of the vehicles were heard imitating the sound of shots being fired from a gun and shouting indecent language, seemingly at individuals on the premises of JC, while also making a commotion at the entrance.
Butler, a past student of JC who played Manning Cup football for the institution in the mid-1980s, expressed his disgust at what took place in a social media post.
"I do not support nor condone this behaviour. I'm extremely disappointed, and this is indeed unfortunate. I cannot support this behaviour. Mona students, I'm embarrassed and saddened," Butler said.
He said this is not the behaviour of champions.
"A man's character is shown not in how he plays the game but in how he handles success. This should not be a reflection on the majority of the school," he said.
Butler, a no-holds-barred hard-tackling defender during his playing days, apologised for the supporters' actions.
"To Jamaica College, I extend my sincere dissatisfaction by the actions of these few students and wish for the continuance of our rivalry on the pitch and our respect off the pitch," Butler said.
Both institutions usually have a friendly rivalry. They did not meet this season, but JC defeated Mona in the semifinals of the Manning Cup last season.
