Defending champions Mount Pleasant Football Academy rallied to draw with Montego Bay United (MBU) 1-1 in their Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League match at Drax Hall yesterday.

In a hard-fought, fairly balanced match, MBU's Owayne Gordon scored the game's first goal in the 29th minute, with Mount Pleasant's Daniel Green equalising in the 33rd minute.

The highly anticipated jam-packed match was filled with excitement, with both teams having several attempts at goal in the early stages while also creating opportunities, but were goal-shy.

Gordon, however, broke the deadlock when he latched onto a lovely through pass to hand MBU the lead, which was quickly erased as Green equalised for Mount Pleasant four minutes later.

Both teams had waves of attacks in the second half and went close to scoring multiple times, but they failed to capitalise.

MBU's Brazilian midfielder Jean Claudio Ferreira received an excellent scoring opportunity, which he failed to convert, as he allowed Mount Pleasant goalkeeper Shaquan Davis to block his effort after being alone with the custodian.

Mount Pleasant coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore said it was a competitive game.

"They scored one, and we equalised. We knew it was going to be a tough game. We were hot and cold in the first half and gave up the midfield. In the second half, we made a few adjustments and control of the game.

"Overall, it was a decent performance from our boys. It wasn't a game where we created a lot of goal-scoring chances, but we welcome the point," Whitmore said.

MBU's Brazilian coach, Neider Dos Santos, agreed that the game was competitive but balanced.

"If somebody deserves to win today, it would be us. We drew, and it was a good match and well played, so I can't complain. The match had very few goal opportunities. We had the best opportunity and didn't convert in the second half in the box. I think we had better chances than them," Dos Santos said.

Mount Pleasant are second in the points standing with 43 points from 13 wins, four draws and three losses, while MBU stand eighth with 27 points from seven wins, six draws and seven losses.
