England-born Josh Kirlew is excited to get his feet wet under the Jamaican banner at the Olympic Games and he's hoping to make a big splash while at it.

"This is my first Olympics, but just like any competition, I always aim to do the best I can, set new personal best times, and who knows? Possibly a national record," he said.

The 24-year-old is one of three athletes will represent Jamaica in the pool at the Paris Games, with diver Yona Knight-Wisdom and swimmer Sabrina Lynn being the other two.

He says just being among this number is an accomplishment in and of itself.

"I feel honoured, and very proud for this opportunity to be representing my country," Kirlew said.

He said he knows the task will not be easy but he is putting in the work to make Jamaica proud.

"Naturally, I am very excited, but I'm trying to stay focused and maintain composure.

I'm working with my coach to continue my training regimen, and I'm hoping to remain in optimal health leading up to the competition," the London-based Enfield Swim Squad athlete said.

After making his debut for the island at the World Athletics Championships in February, Kirlew said it has already had quite an impact on his career.

"Competing at World Championships helped put me on the map as an international swimmer, made me see that my dream to strive for more was within reach, and it has proven to me that with the right mindset and the right work ethic, anything is possible," he said.

He said his aim is to improve on this performance and do his best for the island.

And for those who have been wondering why he chose to represent Jamaica instead of England, Kirlew said he had always seen himself as a Jamaican.

"For as long as I can remember, I've always identified with Jamaica, this comes from the influence of my Jamaican mother, and it's always been my dream to represent Jamaica in my sport," he said.

The Aquatic Sports Association of Jamaica has said it was pleased with Kirlew's qualification for the Olympics.

"Josh your resilience and ability to overcome challenges were inspiring. Congratulations on this hard-earned victory," the association stated.
