After watching his team register a win in their opening daCosta Cup football match, head coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore says he likes the character shown by his team.

Cornwall College rallied from one goal down to thrash Herbert Morrison Technical High School 4-1 in their opening match of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition on Saturday night.

"I wouldn't say it is a statement game, we have to honour our fixtures. It is the first game of the season, I like the enthusiasm of the players," Whitmore said.

"When they fell behind they came back in the game and pushed on to win the game. I believe it was a decent performance by the guys. It being the first game of the season, we have to just take it one game at a time and see how we can improve each game," Whitmore told STAR Sports.

The Montego Bay derby, a highly anticipated game, saw Montegonians come out in their numbers.

In the Zone A fixture at Montego Bay Sports Complex, Herbert Morrison took a 1-0 lead seven minutes in the game courtesy of Quezayne Channer.

However, Cornwall swiftly levelled the scoreline in the 11th minute through Shaheem Bernard, and wasted no time in taking the lead, when Mekhi Foster added to their tally by scoring in the 21st minute.

If Herbert Morrison harboured any hopes of a revival in the second half, Miguel Arnold transformed those thoughts by scoring to establish a two-goal cushion in the 53rd minute. Captain Dante Escoffery, in the 80th minute, finished off their opponents with Cornwall's fourth goal.

Meanwhile, Herbert Morrison's assistant coach, Gary Grant, says the team will have to do more work in training.

"We have to go back on the training ground and see if we can execute a bit better. We have to stay focused and regroup again. Our mindset was to go out there and give a challenge, which we did. After a few minutes of scoring, the players lost concentration. That is one of the key things we have to work on," Grant said.
