Anchovy hunt double against desperate Rusea’s

September 30, 2024

Noting that they are prepared, Zone B's top team Anchovy High will seek to do the double on their more fancied rivals, Rusea's High, in their return matchup in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition at the Collin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea, Hanover, this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

The game in one of a full slate of schoolboy football matches that have been rescheduled after match offcials failed to take the field for Saturday's matches in ISSA's schoolboy football daCosta and Manning Cup competitions.

Maurice Duncan, coach of Anchovy High, told STAR Sports that they are looking to give a "good account" against Rusea's today.

"I know they are going to come at us, especially because we won the first game, so I am prepared to go at their team," Duncan said.

"My aim is to go down there (Lucea), have the boys give a good account of themselves, and whatever the result is I'll be grateful. It is a game-to-game basis," Duncan explained of his team analysis.

Asked about their opponents, he said: "I don't know much about their programme, I only played them once at home. That is as much I know about them."

In their first matchup this season, Anchovy, playing at home, registered a 1-0 win over the many-time champions.

However, according to Duncan, his team will never be considered as favourites when playing against the former champions.

"I don't like the term 'underdogs', but Anchovy, in any zone with Frome and Rusea's, will always be underdogs. We have never won a trophy at the daCosta Cup or any level at ISSA.

"The game is played on the day, so for me, we are not the favourites. But with God's help we will come out victorious," Duncan said.

Meanwhile, Paul 'Tegat' Davis, coach of Rusea's High, said today's matchup is a must-win game and the team wants to dominate at home.

"We are third in the zone and behind on points, so we need to play aggressive and get these three points," he said.

"It is time for us to step up our game so we can move forward. To draw and lose, you fall," Davis told STAR Sports.

Rusea's have won 11 daCosta Cup titles. The furthest Anchovy has advanced in the competition was to the quarter-finals in 2019.

For Davis, Anchovy being on atop of the zone does not phase the team going into the game today.

"We haven't thought about them not losing since the beginning of the season. It is that we have to beat them today and getting the points," Davis said.

"It is not about them winning or losing any game this season, it's about us getting three points," Davis explained.
