A HAT-TRICK by Justin McPherson led St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) to a 6-1 victory over Alphansus Davis High in the round-of-16 ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup at the St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) Sports Complex yesterday.

The result lifted STETHS to four points in Zone 1. They are tied on points with Kemps Hill High who drew 0-0 with Garvey Maceo High yesterday.

Alphansus Davis' second defeat knocked them out of contention for a place in the next round of the daCosta Cup. Garvey Maceo are on two points and will play Alphansus Davis on Saturday. A win for Garvey Maceo could, depending on the result of the STETHS, Kemps Hill clash, lift them into second spot and a place in the quarter-finals of the daCosta Cup.

At the STETHS Sports Complex, McPherson put the hosts in front in the seventh minute but Alphansus Davis' Devaughn Higgins levelled the scores a minute later.

McPherson put STETHS ahead in the 13th minute and three minutes later he completed his hat-trick. Kaieem Lewis then struck in the 43rd minute to put STETHS 4-1 up at half-time. STETHS went 5-1 up in the 84th minute when captain Deandre Barrett scored and in injury time Shemmar Stewart got the final goal for STETHS.

McPherson said the team followed the coach's instructions throughout the game.

"This is my first hat-trick of the season and I am very happy that I could help my team with the victory today because we really needed a win after we drew our game last Saturday. I am just really hoping that we can go all the way," McPherson said.

Continuing, he said, "I feel we could have done much better, and it is still a work in progress."

Tafari Burton, coach of Alphansus Davis, said the team lost its composure early in the game.

"In the first 10 minutes, our boys lost their composure. We got ourselves back in and levelled the scores at 1-1 but shortly after we lost it. I know you never want to lose like this but the experience is, however, good for them because next year most of these players will be back." Burton said.
