Doomsday awaitssome in daCosta Cup
It will be joy for some and doomsday for others in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition, when the round of 16 resumes on Saturday with eight matches across the island.
On the verge of elimination, defending champions Clarendon College find themselves in a must-win situation when they face an already eliminated Cornwall College at Glenmuir High in the feature match at 3 p.m.
After a hard 2-1 loss against quarter-finalist Munro College on Wednesday in St Elizabeth, the Lenworth Hyde-coached Clarendon will be putting all cards on deck to take them over the line. Clarendon College's hopes of getting a shot at retaining their title rests on their registering a win and Munro defeating Frome. Any other result means Clarendon are doomed.
Over in Drax Hall, St Ann's Ocho Rios High, the Group 2 runners-up, will host Group 6 runners-up Dinthill Technical at 3 p.m.
Cruising through the rounds, Ocho Rios had their wheels punctured on Wednesday in an ugly 3-0 defeat by former champions Glenmuir at Glenmuir High's playing field. The Veron Peterkin-coached team will look to pick up the pieces with the help of 14-year-old Dario James.
Dinthill, who also lost to Glenmuir 6-1 on Saturday, demolished Happy Grove High 5-0 and 6-1, respectively. Both are tied on three points, with Ocho Rios in second by a goal difference. Ocho Rios will advance to the quarter-finals by securing a draw.
In Westmoreland, Frome Technical, who are the only undefeated team, will advance to the quarter-finals by securing a draw at Llandilo Sports Complex. Frome, who eliminated Cornwall College with a 1-0 victory, are second on four points.
An interesting matchup looms at Wembley Excellence Centre in Clarendon with Kemps Hill, winners of Group 1, who have the potential to create history when they face Group 3 winners St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) at 3 p.m.
A win for either team guarantees qualification to the quarter-finals.
Garvey Maceo are on two points, and overwhelming favourites to beat a winless Alphansus Davis High.
If Kemps Hill and STETHS draw, and Garvey Maceo win, they all end on five points. The team with the least goal difference will be doomed.
Kemps Hill could have been early qualifiers on Tuesday, but drew 0-0 with Garvey Maceo, while STETHS hit Alphansus for 6-1 on Tuesday, making them Group 1 leaders. Both STETHS and Kemps Hill are tied on four points.
