King, Carty lace centuries as WI claim series

November 07, 2024

Paced by centuries from top-order batsmen Brandon King and Keacy Carty, the West Indies overpowered England for a comfortable eight-wicket victory in the third and final one-day international cricket match at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, last night.

Player-of-the-Match King struck 102 from 117 balls with 13 fours and a six, while Carty struck an unbeaten 128 off 114 balls, striking 15 fours and two sixes as West Indies posted 267 for two off 43 overs, replying to England's 283 for eight off 50 overs.

The win enabled West Indies to take the series 2-1.

After captain Shai Hope won the toss, England were invited to bat and restricted to 263-8 by a West Indies team that gave a decent all-round display. The bowling was tight throughout and matched with good catching, highlighted by Roston Chase's stunning acrobatic overhead effort at backward point to dismiss Jacob Bethell's backfoot cut off Romario Shepherd, as the bowlers enforced a stifling powerplay that bore four wickets for 24 runs.

Opener Phil Salt, who struck 74 from 108 deliveries with four boundaries and one six, held the innings together with the aggressive, but oft reliable Sam Curran, with 40 from 52 deliveries with four boundaries, and Dan Mousley, with 57 from 70 deliveries (5x4s, 1x6), as they all counted half centuries. Cameos from fast bowler Jofra Archer, who smashed 38 from 17 balls with three sixes and two fours, and Jamie Overton, who smacked a 21-ball 32 with four boundaries and a six, propped up the England total.

Matthew Forde claimed three for 35 (10 overs), Shepherd two for 33 (6.1), Alzarri Joseph two for 45 (10) and Chase one for 42 (10).

The Windies made a largely untroubled reply, losing Evin Lewis at 42 when he had scored 19.

However, King and Carty went on to post a 209-run second-wicket partnership that took them to the brink of victory at 251, before King departed, bowled by Reece Topley with the second ball of the 41st over.

Hope joined King and was not out for five when the Windies completed their match and series-winning run chase.
